Incontenence

At some time in our lives, all of us will experience some type of medical condition that may restrict or make it almost impossible to carry on activities we have been accustomed to. Incontinence is one of these misfortunes that without a doubt interfere with our normal routine and lifestyle. With this change come more changes; Feelings of discomfort, depression, embarrassment, hopelessness and frustration.

There are so many helpful products for incontinence available today. When Mom first heard of the idea of disposable underwear she was adamant about not utilizing the product, but once she saw the advantages she was all for it! It was difficult for her to get use to her walker also but it has saved her from many falls that could have led to many more problems.

I guess the idea of using these things can be a feeling of losing one’s independence but the fact is it is prolonging that independence. Once you get them use to the idea it makes everyday a little brighter for everyone concerned.

Mom gets disposable underwear through Medicaid and Medicare. This is such a blessing for anyone with incontinence issues. You need to talk with your physician about this if you are in need of such help. These supplies are shipped to your home and you can also get blue pads, pantie liners and gloves. I know that Mom is thankful for this service and I know I am. The UTI’s have been almost nonexistent because she is staying cleaner and dryer. Mom is also taking supplements such as cranberry and others that I have mentioned in earlier posts.

Seniors and UTI’s

Gram & GrampaUrinary tract infections (UTI) can cause serious health issues. A UTI happens when you have bacteria in the bladder or kidneys. When Left untreated, a UTI can become more serious. Urinary tract infections can lead to an acute or chronic kidney infection, which could permanently damage the kidneys and even lead to kidney failure. UTI’s are a leading cause of sepsis, (presence of microorganisms in tissue: the condition or syndrome caused by the presence of microorganisms or their toxins in the tissue or the bloodstream), a potentially life-threatening blood  infection.
Our seniors are more vulnerable to UTI’s  their  susceptibility to infections are due to their suppressed immune systems and age. The individuals most likely to experience UTI’s are the elderly.
The muscles of the bladder tend to weaken as we age, which leads to more urine being retained in the bladder, (the bladder not emptying completely) and incontinence;  (the inability to control urination), both can lead to urinary tract infections.

In the Western Indies, ginger is often used to treat unrinary tract infections
